The BEST Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg

If you are a fan of The Sound of Music and traveling to Austria, you probably should consider taking the Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg. It is a great way to take in the beautiful landscape of Austria where a few of the scenes of the movie The Sound of Music were filmed.

Salzburg Sound of Music Tour

On the Original Sound of Music tour, you will travel by bus to several destinations where scenes were actually filmed along with other beautiful Austrian landmarks.

During the tour, your tour guide will be able to provide you with background information about the movie and the sites you will be seeing.

You may already know this, but only a few scenes from The Sound of Music were actually filmed in Austria. Most were filmed in a studio back in the United States.

While on the Original Sound of Music tour, we watched scenes from the movie and even enjoyed singing along with the soundtrack!

Here are all the places you will visit during The Sound of Music Tour:

Leopoldskron Palace

Leopoldskron Palace

You will see Leopoldskron Palace sitting on a beautiful lake.

This is the location where the famous boating scene was filmed. You know, the one where everyone falls in the water?

With a pair of binoculars (bring these), you will also be able to see the Captain’s backyard and private palace gardens.

Hellbrunner Allee Entrance

Hellbrunner Street

If you’ve seen the Sound of Music, you will know these walls as soon as you see them.

This is exactly where they filmed the scene in which Maria arrives at the Von Trapp mansion for the first time.

Hellbrunner Allee

It is also where they filmed the scene where they roll the car out of the drive when trying to escape the night of the show.

Gazebo from Sound of Music

Hellbrunn Palace, Gazebo

During your Original Sound of Music Tour you’ll get to see the Gazebo where the “sixteen going on seventeen” scene was filmed.

While it isn’t in its original location, the structure is the one used in filming (it was rebuilt in the gardens of Hellbrunn Palace so visitors could enjoy it).

Tree Scene from Sound of Music

Nearby, you will also find the road where they filmed the scene where children were hanging from the trees (when Baron Von Trapp is arriving home with the Baroness).

Salzburg Lake District

The highlight of the trip is visiting the lake district where panorama shots and scenes of the picnic were filmed.

You will stop there long enough to take in the crisp mountain air and get some pictures of the lovely scenery.

St Michael’s Church, Mondsee

Mondsee – Wedding Chapel

The bus will make a stop in the town of Mondsee, the small lakeside town. Here you will see the famous church (Basilika St. Michael) where the wedding of Maria and Baron von Trapp was filmed in The Sound of Music.

While the movie wedding took place inside the church, the outside of it was never shown in the movie. It’s a shame, because it is quite lovely.

On the day we were there, we were unable to see the interior which I am sure is quite beautiful!

Mirabell Gardens

Mirabell Gardens

One of the most famous scenes from The Sound of Music was filmed in the beautiful Mirabell Gardens.

This is where the scenes featuring the song “Do-Re-Mi” was filmed.

Pegasus Fountain in Salzburg

After or before joining the tour, we recommend seeing the gardens on your own and exploring the Pegasus Fountain as well as the Do-Re-Mi steps!

Salzburg is such an amazing city~ full of history, charm and beautiful landscapes.

The Sound of Music (while amazing) doesn’t give this place justice!

You really must see it in person. It is breathtaking.

While a tour of this sort isn’t for everyone (especially those who don’t know the movie well), we love The Sound of Music and found The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg a great way to see this region of Austria.
